Red Linger Alma never signed her paintings—just stenciled a single red thread across the back of each canvas, as if the work itself could slip away if tied down. She painted only one subject: the narrow flight of steps climbing from her Bucharest courtyard to the street, a view she watched daily while nursing her coffee. If you find her *Pe șiră* (meaning "on thread" in Romanian) in the corner of a gallery, look for that faint red mark; it’s her way of saying the stairs are always leading somewhere else.
