Colart de Laon

French, b. 1350

Colart de Laon is a French Northern Renaissance artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Museo del Prado.

Colart de Laon painted delicate scenes of faith in the early 1400s. His only known work shows Christ kneeling in a moonlit garden while a kneeling nobleman, Louis I of Orléans, watches. The colors are soft but the lines are sharp, part of the quiet realism of the period. Look closer at the donor’s face—his worried eyes give the scene weight. Tap the painting to see the brushstrokes up close.
