Jan Pauwel Gillemans

Jan Pauwel Gillemans is a Flemish Baroque painting artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

Dutch still-life painter Jan Pauwel Gillemans filled ornate frames with overflowing piles of grapes, peaches, and plums, their skins catching light next to cooler silver platters. In “Garland of Fruit Surrounding a Cartouche Opening onto a Landscape,” he stacks colors so thick you can almost smell the sweetness. Look for the tiny opening that tricks your eye into a distant view—an early trick artists used to surprise the viewer. Tap the painted grapes to see how the painter hid his brushwork behind juicy detail.
