Artist
H. S. Merritt
H. S. Merritt is an American Impressionism artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This watercolourist painted the Cornish coast in the mid-20th century, blending light and sea in sheets of translucent colour. Their small sheet Sennen Cove (c.1940) shows a slate-grey bay under a high sky, the waves broken into quick angled strokes that catch the wind. Step from the shingle toward the horizon line and the paper’s white grit becomes part of the light itself.
