Artist

Banavari 1

Indian, 1550–1590

Banavari 1 was an Indian Mughal Painting artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Cleveland Museum of Art.

This hand scroll shows Mughal emperors at play in the 1500s. Banavari painted scenes from royal life in Tabriz—here, wolves are released for the prince to chase, and a fortune-teller warns of a danger the heir will later beat. Both pictures come from books of stories the court loved: Akbar-nama and Tuti-nama. Look for the hunters’ spears and the astrologer’s pointing finger in the margins. Tap the wolf-running page to see the prince’s red turban flash through the dust.
