D. B.

French, b. 1812

D. B. is a French artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Metropolitan Museum of Art.

She painted in miniature, on slivers of ivory so small they fit inside a locket. Officers in crisp coats stare straight at you from these tiny portraits, their faces caught mid-blink like they’ve just been interrupted. One of them—“Portrait of an Officer”—wears a coat that looks borrowed from a toy soldier set; tap the ivory and you’ll see how the light bounces off the gold braid without losing a single thread.
