Artist

Mathias van Somer

Mathias van Somer is a Baroque artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

Mathias van Somer spent his career drawing faces for money—ink on paper, quick and sharp, like a shopkeeper tallying coins. He sketched sultans with curved pipes and sultanas in silver embroidery, fancy clothes made to look real. Why he matters: his prints turn history into people you can almost hear breathing. Look up "Turkish sultans, sultanas and other historical figures" (1660) and watch the room go quiet.
