Artist
George Lewis
George Lewis is a Rococo painting artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.
George Lewis painted the Thames-side town of Woolwich in 1788, when its dockyards hummed with wooden hulls and mast-makers’ sheds. His View of Woolwich shows the Royal Arsenal’s red brick walls rising above barges laden with timber and cannon carriages, all brushed in watercolour’s translucent greys and ochres. He chose a raised bank near the ferry slip so that the viewer looks down on rigging, ropes, and the distant curve of the river—details that let you trace the place’s working life without a single figure present. Tap View of Woolwich to stand where he stood and watch Woolwich unfold.
