Jacob Toorenvliet

Jacob Toorenvliet is a Barbizon school artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Brukenthal National Museum.

Dutch painter Jacob Toorenvliet worked in the 1600s, filling small canvases with finely dressed soldiers and horses. His *Cuirasier cu ceas* from 1668 shows a cuirassier checking a pocket watch, a quiet moment in the noise of 17th-century Europe. Look closer and you’ll spot the brass buttons catching the light and the horse’s bridle catching the dust. Want to see another Dutch scene where a timepiece matters just as much? Tap *Woman with a Pocket Watch* by Caspar Netscher.
