This guy painted what people in charge wanted to see—no surprises, just order. Look at his 1989 portrait of Ceaușescu surrounded by dead Romanian heroes: Mircea the Old, Michael the Brave, two more guys you’d learn in school. The colors are flat, the faces copy-pasted, like a shop window mannequin in a history lesson. He also did a tiny glass bottle still life and a portrait of some fisherman that feels almost human. Find his glass bottles—there’s a whole shelf of them in the corner of the pharmacy museum.
