George Frederick Hughes

George Frederick Hughes is an Impressionism artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Library of Wales.

George Frederick Hughes painted the Welsh seaside town of Tenby so often that locals called him “the man who put Tenby on the map.” In 1875 he stood on the same cliff every morning, waited for the light to hit St. Catherine’s Island just right, and mixed colors on the spot—no studio, no fuss. If you’ve ever seen a postcard where the harbor glows peach at dawn, odds are it’s borrowing a trick Hughes taught the camera. Hunt his Tenby paintings at the National Museum Cardiff; they’re the next best thing to the tide.
