This 18th-century painter worked in small, sunlit studios along Cairo’s Khan al-Khalili bazaar, where he mixed pigments from crushed lapis and pomegranate skins. He once painted a single date palm so precisely that merchants swore it could predict the next harvest. A friend once found him scrubbing a canvas with soap and sand, convinced the old layers were hiding something better underneath.
