Artist
Charles John Colville
Charles John Colville is an Orientalism artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.
Charles John Colville painted watercolours of Egypt’s landmarks in the late 1800s, when British artists flocked to Cairo to capture the Nile’s monuments. His sheet Sphinx & Great Pyramid shows sun-bleached stone under a cloud-streaked sky, the pyramid’s triangle framed by the Sphinx’s paws. Colville’s brushwork lets the paper’s white specks suggest heat shimmer. Step next to his watercolour of Cairo’s skyline at dusk, where minarets prick the twilight.
