Virgil Mihăilescu liked to paint at night, his studio lit by a single bulb swinging from the ceiling like a slow pendulum. He’d started as a sign painter and never quite shook the habit of crisp outlines and bold colors you’d expect on a village shop window. His wife used to joke that his canvases had more personality than the neighbors. Look up *Calica* from 1979—it’s a woman in a red dress against a lime-green wall, the kind of simple scene that makes you pause for no reason at all.
