Dan Hatmanu liked to paint the powerful with a wink. In 1989 he was handed a fat commission to celebrate Elena Ceaușescu’s 70th birthday—she got a pink frothy dress and a sky-high hairdo, he got a quiet joke hidden in the brushstrokes. The canvas still hangs in a Bucharest corridor where visitors read it like a wry footnote to the regime. Swipe to spot the smirk in “Elena Ceaușescu” before the guards notice.
