This 18th-century Romanian monk lived in the Carpathian village of Bucium, where he drew constantly—sometimes on birch bark when paper ran low. His ink sketches of biblical scenes feel alive because he left the lines rough and expressive, as if the figures might step off the page. You’ll find his *Răstignirea lui Iisus* (Crucifixion) tucked inside a 1760s psalter in Iași: look for the way the crowd’s faces blur into a single dark stain at the foot of the cross.
