Artist

Devji Gujarati

Devji Gujarati is a Mughal Painting artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

Devji Gujarati kept a studio in Surat’s crowded lanes where merchants haggled over cloth. He painted on tiny scraps of paper, stacking them in a wooden box like secrets. A single sheet could hold a whole crowd—each face just a dash of ink and a dot for an eye. Slide past the portraits straight to his Untitled page from 1590; zoom in and you’ll see how he made a whole city fit on a thumbnail.
