A Czech painter from the early 1600s, Christian Melich specialized in polished oil portraits and sweeping cityscapes. His View of Warsaw from Vistula river (oil on canvas, 1620) records a bustling river crossing with boats and spires, while the Portrait of King Władysław IV Vasa (oil on canvas, 1640) shows the monarch in armor and ermine. Slide to the king’s portrait to see the lace and light Melich captured so crisply.
