Georg Hinz had a habit of painting still lifes so dense with gold and silver goblets you’d swear you could hear the clink from across the room. Look closely, though, and you’ll notice one cheap pewter spoon slipped in—his sneaky joke about showing off wealth while keeping it real. You can see this trick in person at the Kunsthalle Hamburg’s collection, where Galantar hangs beside other 17th-century Dutch still lifes.
