Portrait of Thomas Sully|Gilbert Stuart

Thomas Sully|Gilbert Stuart is a Romanticism painter. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Sully kept a scrapbook of noses—serious noses, sassy noses, noses that could anchor a whole face. He once painted the Baltimore elite so often they joked he’d memorized their birthmarks. That kind of access let him capture a sidelong glance or a nervous lip-bite in just a few swift strokes. Look for his tiny watercolor of Madame Jerome Bonaparte on ivory; the necklace beads are smaller than a grain of rice yet still catch the light like real glass.
