Artist
Venetian 17th Century

1595–1605
Venetian 17th Century was a Baroque artist. 3 works are cataloged here, principally at National Gallery of Art.
This bronze caster shaped playful myth and quiet faith in 17th-century Venice. Their small sculptures—*Andiron with Figure of Venus* and its fiery twin *Andiron with Figure of Mars*—show Venus lounging on a hearth tool and Mars gripping a spear, both cast in warm bronze around 1600. Two delicate ink drawings in the bundle, *The Christ Child Appearing to Saint Francis* and *The Pietà*, use fine brown pen lines and gentle washes to tell quiet stories on paper. Look next at the bronze Venus to see how myth slipped into everyday objects.
