Rich Black was that quiet printmaker who always worked in the same small studio above a laundromat, the hum of the dryers his soundtrack. He spent years perfecting a single shade of ink—so dense it swallowed light—and used it to make prints that looked like paper-thin voids. You’ll find one of those searing blacks in Untitled (2012), a single sheet from a portfolio of thirty-one screenprints that all share the same quiet menace.
