Artist

Lodovico Ottavio Burnacini

Lodovico Ottavio Burnacini is a Baroque artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

Lodovico Burnacini worked in Vienna, designing all the sets and costumes for the Habsburg court’s operas. He once built a whole fake city from wood and canvas for a single show, and the emperor loved it so much he kept it up for years. That’s the kind of designer he was—turning a stage into a world you could step inside. Hunt down his prints of *Il Pomo d’Oro* (1668) and you’ll see how he turned gold leaf into thunderclouds and marble into stage smoke—no modern trickery, just paint and wood and a lot of glue.
