Artist

Hans Klocker

Hans Klocker is a Renaissance artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

Hans Klocker’s hands were stained with egg tempera by the time he finished painting his altarpiece in a cramped Alpine workshop, where the smell of linseed oil and candle wax never quite faded. He liked to sneak in tiny, mischievous self-portraits—always peeking from the shadows—because he believed a holy scene should still feel lived-in. If you look closely at the Untitled altarpiece around 1500, you’ll spot him grinning among the saints like an uninvited guest. Tap the work itself to hunt for his hidden face inside the golden glow.
