Van der Werff employs a smooth, polished oil technique characteristic of his late‑Baroque to early‑Rococo transition, achieving delicate modeling of flesh and fabric. The chiaroscuro of a dark sky punctuated by soft clouds creates a subtle contrast that highlights the luminous figures, while the gentle coloration reinforces the work’s devotional tone.

Created in the early eighteenth century, the painting entered the State Hermitage Museum’s holdings, where it remains on display. Van der Werff, a Dutch artist noted for portraiture and mythological subjects, also fulfilled commissions for the Medici family; his brother Pieter served as his chief assistant and pupil.
