About this work
Overview
Adriaen van der Werff’s 1718 oil painting titled *The Annunciation* presents a calm, intimate moment from the biblical narrative. Executed in the refined Rococo idiom, the work balances delicate coloration with a subtle play of light, focusing attention on the two central figures within a modestly detailed interior setting.
Subject & Meaning
The composition captures the moment the Archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will bear the Christ child. Gabriel, rendered in a luminous white garment and feathered wings, leans toward Mary, whose modest dress and composed posture convey both reverence and acceptance of the divine message.
Technique & Style
Van der Werff employs a restrained chiaroscuro, allowing the illuminated forms of the angel and Mary to emerge from a softly darkened background. The painter’s smooth brushwork and careful modeling create a seamless surface, while the faint landscape beyond the figures adds depth without distracting from the central encounter.
History & Provenance
The canvas entered the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister’s collection, where it remains on display. Van der Werff, noted for his portraits and mythological scenes, also worked for the Medici court; his brother Pieter assisted him and later pursued his own artistic career.
