Cattle Watering by an Estuary

Cuijps employs a subtle chiaroscuro, contrasting the warm, sun‑kissed flesh of the cattle with the cooler tones of the water and sky. The delicate handling of light creates a sense of depth, guiding the eye from the foreground herd to the distant boat. His brushwork remains smooth and refined, characteristic of the luminous, atmospheric style that defines his riverine landscapes.

Created during the height of the Dutch Golden Age, the painting remained in private collections before entering the Scottish National Gallery’s holdings. The museum acquired the work as part of its effort to represent 17th‑century Dutch landscape painting, where Cuyp is recognized as a leading figure.

Cuyp, born and trained in Dordrecht under his father Jacob Gerritszoon Cuyp, was part of a prolific family of painters. His oeuvre frequently features cattle and waterways bathed in the golden light of early morning or late afternoon, reflecting contemporary Dutch interests in pastoral serenity and the prosperity of a maritime nation.
