About this work

Overview

Created in 1972, this screenprint forms part of a mixed portfolio that includes ten intaglios, seven screenprints, three lithographs and a single aquatint. The work is presently held by the Museum of Modern Art and exemplifies the artist’s engagement with print media during a prolific period of production.

Subject & Meaning

The composition features a stark, purple field bordered in dark tone, within which a white, loosely rendered figure lies on its side, its limbs splayed outward. A faint, gray silhouette drifts near the lower edge. The motif of a horse, recurrent in the artist’s oeuvre after an extended stay in China, informs the abstracted form, suggesting movement and tension through simplified silhouette.

Technique & Style

Executed as a screenprint, the piece relies on high‑contrast layering of flat color and line. The bold purple plane and dark border are juxtaposed with the delicate, hand‑like sketchiness of the central figure, a visual strategy that emphasizes the immediacy of the drawing within the mechanical process of printmaking.

History & Provenance

Alirio Palacios, a Venezuelan practitioner of drawing, graphic design, printmaking and sculpture, produced this work amid a series of prints that circulated in museum and public exhibitions across Caracas, Havana and other international venues. The artist was awarded Venezuela’s National Prize of Plastic Arts in 1977, underscoring the significance of this period in his career.

Context

The inclusion of horse imagery reflects Palacios’s artistic dialogue with his time in China, where the animal became a symbolic element in his visual language. The portfolio’s varied techniques—intaglio, lithography, aquatint alongside screenprinting—demonstrate his exploration of different print processes to convey similar thematic concerns.
