About this work

Overview

Antoine‑Jean Gros painted the Battle of Aboukir in oil on canvas between 1805 and 1806, fulfilling a commission from Joachim Murat. The work was presented at the Salon of 1806 and later entered the collections of the Musée du Luxembourg, before being transferred to the Palace of Versailles, where it remains.

Subject & Meaning

The canvas depicts the 1799 clash at Aboukir Bay, focusing on a dramatic cavalry charge led by a rider on a white horse. Soldiers in vivid red and blue uniforms engage in close combat, while the wounded and fallen litter the foreground, underscoring the ferocity and human cost of the encounter.

Technique & Style

Gros employs vigorous brushwork and a pronounced impasto that convey the turbulence of battle. Contrasting bright reds with deep shadows heightens the sense of movement, while the loosely rendered coastline, fort and ships in the distance provide a hazy, atmospheric backdrop.

History & Provenance

After its Salon debut, the painting was displayed in the National Palace of Naples in 1808. It was acquired for the Musée du Luxembourg in 1833 and, two years later, transferred to the Palace of Versailles. A preparatory sketch titled Murat Defeating the Turkish Army at Aboukir survives at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
