About this work

Overview

Correggio’s oil painting, titled Madonna of Saint George, was executed around 1530 and is presently housed in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden. The work presents the Virgin Mary and the infant Christ centrally, framed beneath an ornamental floral canopy that recalls Mantegna’s Madonna della Vittoria.

Subject & Meaning

Flanking the central figures are a quartet of saints: to the left, Saint Geminianus, patron of Modena, appears in episcopal vestments holding a model of his city, accompanied by a cherubic attendant; opposite him stands John the Baptist. On the right, Saint Peter Martyr, the Dominican patron of the commissioning confraternity, is depicted with his characteristic head wound, while Saint George triumphs over a dragon, its severed head at his foot, his sword and helm supported by three putti.

Technique & Style

Correggio employs a soft chiaroscuro that models the figures with delicate transitions from deep reds and blues to luminous flesh tones, creating a sense of three‑dimensionality within the shallow pictorial space. The floral dome and the intricate drapery showcase his skill in rendering texture and movement, while the background recedes into a dark arch and distant landscape, enhancing the intimate focus on the holy group.

History & Provenance

The painting was commissioned for a Dominican confraternity, likely intended for devotional use, and later entered the collection of the Dresden Gemäldegalerie. Its attribution to Correggio has been consistently accepted, and the work has remained a key example of his mature religious compositions.

Context

Created during the later phase of Correggio’s career, the composition reflects the influence of earlier Renaissance models, especially Mantegna’s treatment of the Madonna under a decorative canopy. The inclusion of local saints such as Geminianus underscores the work’s regional significance for Modena, while the presence of Saint George aligns with the confraternity’s patronage.
