About this work

Overview

This portrait presents the Victorian actress Violet Cameron, captured in a photographic format that was popular in the late nineteenth century. The image originates from a series of small-format prints that were commonly exchanged as collectibles and displayed in personal albums.

Subject & Meaning

Cameron, a noted stage performer of her era, is depicted either in everyday attire or in costume, reflecting the dual role of actors as both public figures and private individuals. Such images served both as personal mementos and as promotional material for theatrical productions.

Technique & Style

The print is an albumen photograph, produced from a glass negative and adhered to a stiff card bearing the photographer’s imprint. Initially issued as cartes de visite—approximately the size of a visiting card—these were later superseded by the larger cabinet cards, which offered greater durability and visual impact.

History & Provenance

The photograph was part of a larger assemblage of cartes de visite and cabinet cards that were removed from their original card backs and bound into albums by Guy Tristram Little, a solicitor and avid collector of ephemera. Upon his death in 1953, Little bequeathed the collection to the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Context

During the Victorian period, photography emerged as a novel medium for documenting public personalities. The craze for collecting small portrait cards peaked in the 1860s, with subjects ranging from landscapes to theatrical figures, before being eclipsed by postcards and larger studio portraits in the 1890s.
