Hadleigh Castle is a print from a series of 22 mezzotints based on John Constable's paintings and sketches, published between 1830 and 1832.
Subject & Meaning
The series, titled English Landscape, showcases Constable's emphasis on the role of light and shadow in landscape, drawing on the precedents of Claude Lorrain and J.M.W. Turner, to promote appreciation for England's scenery.
Technique & Style
The mezzotints were executed by David Lucas, a young mezzotinter and former pupil of Samuel Reynolds, who worked closely with Constable to produce the series.
History & Provenance
Constable supervised the publication of English Landscape, revising the series in 1833, and after his death in 1837, Lucas completed and published additional plates.
