Cornelis Kruys, a Dutch Golden Age painter, created A Jug, Fruit, Food and other Things on a Table in 1660. This oil painting exemplifies the still-life genre prevalent during the period. It depicts a carefully arranged collection of domestic items and foodstuffs, inviting viewers to observe the textures and forms of everyday objects. The work reflects the artist's focus on detailed representation, characteristic of his broader oeuvre.

Subject & Meaning

The composition centers on a table draped with a white cloth, upon which an assortment of items is meticulously arranged. Prominent elements include a dark jug, various pieces of fruit, and gleaming metal dishes. A silver tray holds a teapot and cups, while a lidded beaker, possibly containing columbines, and a rummer glass add further detail. The selection of objects creates a rich domestic scene, typical of 17th-century Dutch still life painting.

Technique & Style

Kruys employed oil paint to render the diverse textures and forms of the objects with precision. The artist's skillful manipulation of light and shadow is evident, creating a sense of depth and three-dimensionality across the surface. Light illuminates certain areas, making them appear smooth and reflective, while carefully placed shadows enhance the realism of the scene. This technique contributes to the painting's lifelike quality and visual engagement.

History & Provenance

Born in Haarlem in 1619, Cornelis Kruys received his initial artistic training within the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke.
