About this work

Overview

The overall tone is subdued, dominated by muted greens, browns and grays that lend the scene a soft, atmospheric quality.

Created in 1918 by Danish modernist Edvard Weie, this oil painting depicts a tranquil rural landscape. The composition centers on a modest rise dotted with a handful of trees and a few distant structures, while the foreground consists of flat, dry grass and a faint, winding track. The overall tone is subdued, dominated by muted greens, browns and grays that lend the scene a soft, atmospheric quality.

Subject & Meaning

The work presents an unadorned view of the countryside, emphasizing the quiet stillness of an ordinary hillside. By limiting detail to a small cluster of foliage and modest buildings, the artist invites contemplation of the landscape’s inherent simplicity and the passage of time across a seemingly timeless terrain.

Technique & Style

Weie employs loose, uneven brushwork that conveys a sense of immediacy, as if the surface were a rapid sketch rather than a meticulously finished canvas. The palette is restrained, with earth tones that blend into one another, creating a hazy effect. This approach aligns with post‑Impressionist tendencies toward expressive color and texture while retaining a personal, almost raw handling of paint.

History & Provenance

Since its completion, the painting has been part of the collection of Denmark’s National Gallery, Statens Museum for Kunst. It remains an example of Weie’s early forays into landscape within the broader context of his modernist practice, illustrating his engagement with contemporary European artistic currents of the early twentieth century.
