Still Life with Oranges

Still Life with Oranges is an oil painting by Edvard Weie. It dates from 1922 and is held in the collection of the Statens Museum for Kunst.
About this work
Overview
Created in 1922, this oil painting by Danish modernist Edvard Weie presents a composition of fruit arranged on a tabletop. Central to the scene are several oranges, accompanied by lemons and assorted objects, while a leafy plant in a pot occupies the left side. The work is part of the permanent collection of the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen.
Subject & Meaning
The arrangement of citrus fruits and everyday items reflects a traditional still‑life genre, yet the vivid palette and dynamic placement suggest an interest in the sensory qualities of color and form. By emphasizing the contrast between the bright oranges and surrounding hues, the painting invites contemplation of the visual tension between natural objects and their painted representation.
Technique & Style
Weie employs broad, expressive brushstrokes that animate the surface, allowing colors—predominantly orange, yellow, green, and earth tones—to interact with a sense of movement. The handling of light and shadow is simplified, focusing on chromatic relationships rather than precise detail, aligning the work with the modernist tendency toward abstraction within a recognizable subject.
History & Provenance
After its completion, the painting entered the collection of Denmark’s national gallery, where it remains on display. Weie’s career was later recognized with the Eckersberg Medal in 1925, three years after this work was produced. He continued to work in Denmark until his death in Frederiksberg in 1943.
