About this work
Overview
Ferdinand Bol’s 1667 oil on canvas portrays the Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter in a formal pose, flanked by maritime symbols and a seascape that includes his flagship De Zeven Provinciën. The composition balances portraiture with a detailed naval backdrop, emphasizing both personal authority and naval achievement.
Subject & Meaning
De Ruyter is shown in a dark, elaborate coat, holding a sword and a globe, while a white ruff and black sash frame his face. The globe and the sailing ships behind him allude to his command of the fleet and his role in expanding Dutch maritime power, linking the individual to the broader enterprise of the navy.
Technique & Style
Bol employs chiaroscuro, using strong contrasts of light and shadow to model de Ruyter’s features and to give depth to the surrounding sea and vessels. The background seascape, attributed to Willem van de Velde the Younger, is rendered with a delicate handling of clouds and water, complementing the portrait’s sober palette.
History & Provenance
Six identical copies of the portrait were commissioned to commemorate the Four Days’ Battle, each placed in an Admiralty office.
Six identical copies of the portrait were commissioned to commemorate the Four Days’ Battle, each placed in an Admiralty office. The version now in the Rijksmuseum was originally presented by de Ruyter to the Admiralty of Zeeland in Middelburg. It later appeared in the Department of Convoys and Licences in Vlissingen, was donated to the Koninklijk Museum, and has been loaned to the Het Scheepvaartmuseum.
Context
The work reflects the Dutch Republic’s practice of honoring naval heroes through official portraiture, integrating portrait and marine painting traditions. By pairing de Ruyter with a detailed depiction of his flagship, the painting underscores the intertwined identities of commander and vessel during the mid‑17th‑century naval conflicts.
