Pourbaix employs chiaroscuro to model Marino’s face and hands, allowing the illuminated areas to emerge from a dark, curtained background. The subtle gradations of tone create a three‑dimensional presence, while the crisp rendering of fabrics and accessories reflects the meticulous Flemish tradition of texture and surface detail.

Created during Pourbaix’s period of service to various European courts, the portrait later entered the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Its provenance traces back to private holdings before being acquired by the museum, where it now contributes to the institution’s representation of early Baroque portraiture.

The painting belongs to the broader Flemish Baroque movement, which emphasized realism, rich coloration, and dramatic lighting. Pourbaix, part of a family of artists, was known for serving patrons such as the Archdukes of Brussels, the Duke of Mantua, and the French court, situating this work within a network of elite patronage across the Low Countries and Italy.
