Trained at the Académie Julian in Impressionist and Neo‑Impressionist methods, de Monfreid later gravitated toward Symbolism through his association with Paul Gauguin and the Les Nabis circle. The work entered the Cleveland Museum of Art’s holdings, where it remains on display as part of the museum’s European painting collection.
