Technique & Style
David employs a restrained palette of earthy reds, blues, and greens, punctuated by brighter accents in the garments. The handling of light creates subtle chiaroscuro, modeling the forms and giving depth to the figures against a distant landscape of hills and a town. Fine brushwork renders the delicate marks on Christ’s body and the textures of the fabrics.
History & Provenance
Gerard David, active in Antwerp and Bruges, enjoyed considerable success during his lifetime, though his reputation waned after his death and was only revived in the nineteenth century. The painting entered the Art Institute of Chicago’s holdings in the 20th century, where it remains on display as a representative example of David’s devotional oeuvre.
