About this work

Overview

Giovanni Baglione, an Italian painter working at the transition between late Mannerism and early Baroque, completed the canvas *Joseph und Potiphars Weib* in 1607. The work illustrates a moment from the Genesis narrative in which Joseph refuses the seduction of Potiphar’s wife. Today the painting belongs to the collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.

Subject & Meaning

The scene captures the biblical episode in which Joseph, a servant of the Egyptian official Potiphar, resists the advances of the official’s wife, traditionally named Zulaikha. By portraying Joseph’s moral steadfastness against temptation, the composition reflects contemporary Counter‑Reformation concerns with virtue and the dangers of lust.

Technique & Style

Baglione employs a pronounced chiaroscuro, allowing the faces and outstretched arms of the two women to emerge from a tenebrous interior. The contrast of a stark white garment against a richly patterned yellow‑blue costume heightens the drama, while the overall composition shows the early Baroque shift toward naturalism and emotional immediacy.

History & Provenance

Created in Rome during Baglione’s mature period, the painting entered the Alte Pinakothek’s holdings in the 19th century as part of the museum’s acquisition of Italian Baroque works. Baglione, also known for his biographical writings on fellow artists, documented his rivalry with Caravaggio, a contemporary whose use of light likely influenced this work.
