About this work

Overview

Gregorio Pagani’s 1596 oil painting assembles the Virgin and Child with four saints—Francis of Assisi, Gregory the Great, John the Baptist, and Margaret of Cortona. Executed in the late‑Mannerist style of Florence, the work is part of the State Hermitage Museum’s collection.

Subject & Meaning

At the centre, the Madonna holds the infant Christ, both dressed in delicate, light fabrics. Surrounding them, the saints are identified by their traditional attributes: a mitred bishop with crozier, a penitential figure in brown, a kneeling figure in yellow, and a standing saint in red. Their presence creates a devotional grouping that emphasizes intercession and sanctity.

Technique & Style

Pagani employs the refined brushwork and elongated figures typical of Florentine Mannerism. The palette balances soft pinks and blues of the central pair with richer reds, yellows, and browns of the surrounding saints, while the composition arranges the figures in a harmonious, slightly diagonal grouping that guides the viewer’s eye toward the Virgin.

History & Provenance

Trained under Santi di Tito and later in Ludovico Cigoli’s workshop, Pagani established a reputation in late‑sixteenth‑century Florence. The painting entered the State Hermitage Museum’s holdings, where it remains on display as a representative example of his mature output.

Context

The inclusion of Francis of Assisi, Gregory the Great, John the Baptist, and Margaret of Cortona reflects the Counter‑Reformation emphasis on saintly models of piety. Their varied roles—founder of the Franciscan order, early church father, prophetic forerunner of Christ, and penitential hermit—offer a broad spectrum of spiritual exemplars for the faithful.
