About this work

Overview

Created in 1838, *En vase med blomster* is an oil on canvas still‑life that presents a ceramic vase brimming with a loose bouquet of pink, yellow and red blossoms. The darkened backdrop intensifies the chromatic contrast, allowing the meticulously rendered petals and foliage to dominate the visual field. The work belongs to the collection of Denmark’s National Gallery.

Subject & Meaning

The composition focuses on the transient beauty of cut flowers, arranged as if spilling from their container, a motif that underscores the fleeting nature of life and the artist’s attention to natural detail. The interplay of vivid hues against a somber background invites contemplation of color, light, and the delicate balance between abundance and restraint.

Technique & Style

Hellesen employs a highly realistic approach, rendering each petal, leaf and stem with fine brushwork that captures texture and translucency. The porcelain vase is depicted with subtle reflections and a tactile surface, while the chiaroscuro of the dark background enhances depth. The painting reflects the 19th‑century Danish tradition of meticulous still‑life execution.

History & Provenance

The piece was painted by Hanne Hellesen, who received private instruction from Johan Laurentz Jensen. After its creation, the work entered the holdings of Statens Museum for Kunst, Denmark’s national gallery. Other paintings by Hellesen were later acquired for the Royal Collection, finding homes in the interiors of Kronborg and Fredensborg Palaces.

Context

Hellesen worked at a time when the Royal Danish Academy excluded women, prompting many female artists to pursue private study. Within this environment, she emerged as one of the most skilled practitioners of floral painting in the early 19th century, contributing to a broader European interest in botanical subjects and domestic still‑life genres.
