About this work

Overview

Christian IV’s audiensgemak på Rosenborg, executed in oil in 1854, presents an elaborate interior scene rendered by Danish painter and State Councillor Heinrich Hansen. The canvas captures a richly decorated hall with a lofty ceiling, a central fireplace, and a checkered floor, populated by a group of figures engaged in music, conversation and quiet observation.

Subject & Meaning

The composition focuses on a moment of courtly leisure, where a harpsichordist and a standing gentleman by a window suggest cultured pastime within a royal setting. A dog curled on a rug contributes a domestic touch, while the surrounding portraits on the walls reinforce the atmosphere of aristocratic refinement and the social rituals of the era.

Technique & Style

Hansen’s handling reflects the Biedermeier emphasis on precise detail and intimate domesticity. Fine brushwork delineates the intricate plasterwork of the ceiling and the texture of the marble fireplace, while a subdued palette and careful lighting model the reflective surfaces of the paintings and the glossy floor tiles, creating a realistic yet composed tableau.

History & Provenance

Since its creation, the work has remained in Danish public collections, currently residing in the Statens Museum for Kunst. The painting illustrates the artist’s lifelong focus on architectural subjects, a tradition continued by his son Adolf Heinrich‑Hansen, who also pursued a career in architectural painting.

Context

Produced during the mid‑19th century, the piece aligns with the Biedermeier movement’s fascination with orderly, interior spaces that convey middle‑class values of comfort and order. By depicting a historic royal venue, Hansen merges contemporary aesthetic concerns with a nostalgic view of Denmark’s monarchical heritage.
