About this work

Gary Hume made a drawing for the V&A’s 150th birthday album in 2007. The brief asked artists to show what inspired them about the museum’s collections. His page could be any kind of image or even just words.

Artists, designers, and architects all joined in. Each got one page to share their view of the museum.

Overview

In 2007 the Victoria and Albert Museum marked the 150th anniversary of its South Kensington premises with a commemorative album. One hundred fifty creators from fields such as art, design, architecture and photography each contributed a single page, interpreting what the museum’s holdings meant to them.

Subject & Meaning

The invitation encouraged participants to reflect on the aspects of the V&A’s collections that most inspired them. Contributors could convey this through visual means or a brief textual statement, allowing a personal response to the institution’s breadth of objects and ideas.

Technique & Style

Gary Hume answered the brief with a drawing, employing his characteristic approach to line and form. The work occupies a single sheet within the album, aligning with the project’s flexible format that accepted drawings, sketches, graphic designs, digital images or simple words.

History & Provenance

The album was produced specifically for the museum’s sesquicentennial celebrations. Each page, including Hume’s, was assembled into a limited-edition volume that documents the diverse creative reactions of the invited artists at that historic moment.
