Repin employs a restrained palette dominated by muted greens and deep blacks, punctuated by the bright colors of the floral arrangement. Fine brushwork renders the lace trim of the dress and the texture of the piano’s surface, while soft modeling gives the figure a three‑dimensional presence characteristic of realist portraiture.

Since its completion, the portrait has remained in Russian public collections, eventually entering the Tretyakov Gallery’s holdings. Its acquisition reflects the museum’s focus on works that document prominent figures of Russian cultural life in the late nineteenth century.
