About this work

Overview

In 1658, Jürgen Ovens—trained in the workshop of Rembrandt and active as both painter and dealer—produced an oil portrait of the Amsterdam merchant Cornelis Nuyts. Executed during the height of the Dutch Golden Age, the work exemplifies the period’s focus on individual likeness and social standing. It now forms part of the Rijksmuseum’s permanent collection.

Subject & Meaning

The sitter, an elderly man, is seated in a richly upholstered red chair, his hands resting on the armrests while he holds a folded sheet of paper, likely a letter or account document. Dressed in a black over‑robe with a crisp white ruff, he conveys the attire of a prosperous merchant. The presence of an open book and a coat of arms in the background underscores his commercial and civic identity.

Technique & Style

Ovens employs a pronounced chiaroscuro, allowing the illuminated face to emerge from a dark, muted backdrop. The subtle modeling of flesh and the careful rendering of fabrics reveal the influence of Rembrandt’s tonal mastery. Details such as the delicate script on the paper and the texture of the red upholstery are achieved through fine brushwork, creating a sense of depth and materiality.

History & Provenance

Since its creation, the portrait has remained in Dutch hands, eventually entering the Rijksmuseum’s collection, where it is displayed among other 17th‑century Dutch portraits. The painting’s provenance reflects the typical trajectory of merchant commissions that were preserved as family heirlooms before being acquired by public institutions.
