About this work

Overview

Created in 1866 by Polish artist Józef Brodowski the Elder, this oil painting depicts a solitary horse positioned before a modest stone barn. The work is part of the National Museum in Warsaw’s holdings and reflects the realist tendencies that were emerging in mid‑nineteenth‑century Polish art.

Subject & Meaning

The central figure is a brown horse with white markings on its legs, belly, and face, its head turned slightly toward the viewer. The animal stands on a mixed ground of dirt and grass, suggesting a rural setting, while the adjacent barn, marked by a small window and door, anchors the scene in everyday farm life.

Technique & Style

Brodowski employs a clear chiaroscuro, using contrasts of light and shadow to model the horse’s musculature and the barn’s stone walls, thereby giving the composition a sense of three‑dimensional depth. The brushwork remains restrained, aligning the piece with the realist emphasis on accurate observation.

History & Provenance

Since its completion, the painting has remained in Poland, eventually entering the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw, where it is displayed as an example of the artist’s contribution to the realist movement within the broader context of 19th‑century Polish painting.
