About this work

Overview

Jacob Duck’s 1640 oil painting, titled *Card Players and Merrymakers*, presents a convivial gathering in an interior space. Figures of both genders are arranged around a table, some engaged in music-making with a lute and a cello, while others converse or observe. The composition balances activity and stillness, offering a snapshot of everyday leisure among 17th‑century Dutch townsfolk.

Subject & Meaning

The work captures a moment of social interaction, emphasizing communal enjoyment and the role of music in domestic life. By portraying musicians alongside card players, Duck highlights the intertwining of recreation and cultural practices, suggesting a harmonious blend of sound and game that typified middle‑class entertainment of the period.

Technique & Style

Duck employs chiaroscuro to model faces and garments, allowing light to fall on select figures while the surrounding space recedes into shadow. This contrast creates depth and a three‑dimensional presence. The brushwork is detailed in the textures of clothing and instruments, yet retains the loose handling characteristic of Dutch genre painting.

History & Provenance

Originally executed in Utrecht, the painting remained in private collections before entering the State Hermitage Museum’s holdings, where it is displayed today. Duck, who began his career as a goldsmith and later trained under Joost Cornelisz Droochsloot, worked in several Dutch cities before returning to Utrecht, where he died in 1667.

Context

Created during the Dutch Golden Age, the piece reflects the era’s fascination with genre scenes that documented ordinary life with moral undertones. Such works catered to a burgeoning middle‑class market eager for images that celebrated domestic virtue, leisure, and the pleasures of music and games.
