About this work

Overview

Jacob van Ruisdael’s Mountainous Landscape, executed in oil around 1675‑1679, measures roughly 40 by 43 inches. The work exemplifies the Dutch Golden Age’s mature landscape tradition and currently belongs to the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.

Subject & Meaning

The canvas depicts a somber, rocky terrain bisected by a river on which a timber raft and a modest sailing boat drift. To the right a cottage, a timber stack and a water‑mill occupy the bank, while a castle crowns a rocky hill near the centre. A distant, conical hill fades into cloud, suggesting an evening atmosphere.

Technique & Style

Ruisdael employs a muted palette and deep chiaroscuro to convey the twilight setting, emphasizing the texture of rock and water. The composition balances human activity—boats, mill, timber—with the imposing natural forms, a hallmark of his late‑period landscapes.

History & Provenance

First recorded by Hofstede de Groot in 1911, the painting was listed as No. 155 and noted for its darkened condition. It was once attributed to Salomon van Ruisdael and engraved by P.E. Moitte for the Brühl collection. By 1835 it was valued at £300, entered the Hermitage catalog as No. 1147 in 1901, and remains in that museum’s holdings.

Context

The scene mirrors several contemporaneous works by Ruisdael, reflecting his recurring motifs of rugged terrain and water‑mill complexes. These compositions later served as visual references for 18th‑ and 19th‑century landscape painters who looked to Dutch models for inspiration.
