Looten’s handling of the central, gnarled tree demonstrates meticulous attention to texture; the bark and tangled roots are painted with fine, layered strokes that convey a tactile quality. Born in Amsterdam in 1617 or 1618, Looten worked there before relocating to England sometime after 1664. The painting entered the Alte Pinakothek’s holdings in the 19th century, though earlier ownership records are sparse. Looten is also noted for having taught the later landscape painter Jan Griffier, linking him to a lineage of Dutch‑English artistic exchange.
